Monolayer graphene, representative of atomically thin crystals, has recently shown unexpectedly high proton and deuteron permeability under ambient conditions. It also permeates (filters) hydrogen (deuterium) isotope ion with high selectivity. These results suggest possible ways of developing novel and efficient hydrogen isotope gas enrichment techniques for manufacturing silicon semiconductors, optical fibers, drug development, nuclear fusion, and other related applications. And yet, despite its importance, experimental studies remain scarce and the separation mechanism contentious. Here, we introduce our recent findings on how quantum tunneling of hydrons through graphene could account for the high hydron selectivity of graphene.

In the stage blasting of a mountain tunnel, the condition of single hole initiation in which the effect of other stage does not enter was made by increasing the interval of initiation time between front and rear stages using an electron detonator, and the waveform of vibration and sound pressure at that time was measured. The knowledge obtained from the analysis of sound pressure waveform of single hole blasting is considered to be effective to be utilized for the examination of sound pressure reduction effect of controlled blasting and the analysis of error of noise prediction formula.

In Japan, the deterioration of the infrastructure built in the high economic growth period (1954-1979) becomes big social problem. We have developed the inspection method of the defect in the concrete by using the laser technologies. We have succeeded to demonstrate the high-speed inspection of a mock-defect in concrete by using the high repetition rate impact laser and laser vibrograph. The repetition rate of inspection was improved to be 25 Hz. We commented about this measurement technique.

Ion yields of Xe to Xe were observed as a function of laser intensity and compared with the results from a single active electron based Ammosov-Delone-Krainov model. Unexpected ionization probabilities for lower charge states and also no interplay between the inner- and outer-shells by screening are inferred. Suppression of nonsequential ionization towards higher intensity and few optical cycle regimes is also proved.

The recombination rate constant was independent of pressure up to 13 MPa below 4.2 K, whereas it remarkably decreases with the increase in pressure above. The absence of pressure effect indicates that the H atoms do not diffuse by the physical exchange of positions with neighboring H molecules, but by the tunneling reaction H + H H + H.

In the present study, we have analyzed -forbidden transitions recently observed. The measured hindrance factors are compared with the values calculated using the -tunneling model. We have also investigated isotope dependences of tunneling probabilities particularly for neutron-rich nuclei.
